| Description
of Division: |
The
Community & Senior Services Division is
housed at the Jack Crippen Multipurpose Senior
Center, which is a one-stop multipurpose center
and focal point where services provided by licensed
professional staff, volunteers, and outside
agencies are available.
The
division’s goal is to help individuals’
age in place by providing valuable services
at the Multi-Purpose Senior Center and in the
home. The Center is open to anyone 50 years
of age or older but certain activities and services
have age restrictions. Adult
education and Bingo are open
to anyone over 18 years of age. Lunch
is served 11:30 AM Monday through Friday with
a suggested donation of $2.00 for those 60 years
of age and older. Care
management services are available
to functionally impaired individuals 18 years
of age and over who need assistance in obtaining
services that will allow them to remain safely
in their homes. Information
& assistance helps individuals
resolve a wide array of problems by referring
them to community resources, which can help
them with their problem or acting as an advocate
to resolve certain problems. Free educational
classes, seminars, health screenings, and advocacy
services are held on a regular basis.
The
Los Angeles County Department of Senior and
Community Services has designated the City of
El Monte Senior Center as a focal Point on Aging
for the dissemination of multi-purpose information
about services available to older adults in
the community. As such the Jack Crippen Senior
Center has become a highly visible and accessible
facility where everyone can obtain information
and has access to a variety of services ranging
from leisure programs, health care, nutrition,
legal advice, social services and consumer advocacy.
For families, the center serves as a Focal Point
and resource that supports their efforts in
caring for an aging relative or friend.
The
Jack Crippen Senior Center / Community &
Senior Services Division is committed to serving
as a hub in the community spotlighting its concern
for its older adults. The Center is open to
anyone 50 years of age or older but certain
activities and services have age restrictions.

Education |
Fee
and free adult education and contract classes
are available at the center, for those 18 years
of age and older.
Adult
education classes and activities such as exercise,
yoga, Spanish,
home decorative arts (ceramics
& painting), and English-As-A-Second-Language
are available.
Several senior clubs and organizations meet.
Bingo is held every Monday at 10:00 AM and Thursday
evenings at 6:30 PM. More than 8,000 individuals
a month benefit from the programs of this division,
call for specific hours of operation.

Tax Assessor |
A
representative of the Los Angeles County Assessor’s
Office will be assisting our seniors with property
tax appeals on a quarterly basis. |

| Tax
Assistance |
The
Jack Crippen Senior Center offers assistance in
filing simple federal and state income tax returns.
Trained, certified volunteers assist seniors in
completing the required forms from late January
through April 15. Bi-lingual English/Spanish speaking
volunteers are available. |

| Legislative
Advocacy |
Field
Representatives from Senator Gloria Romero, Assemblyman
Mike Eng's and Congresswoman Hilda Solis' office
will be here on the first, second and third Wednesday
of each month at 11:00 AM. If you need assistance
with state issues such as taxes, consumer rights,
Veteran's benefits, environmental issues, health
services or housing, this is your opportunity
to let your Senator and Assemblyman know. No appointment
is required. |

| Renters
& Homeowners Assistance |
The
State of California annual Homeowner and Renter
Assistance Program allows homeowners to receive
a portion of their property tax assessed on their
home, and renters can receive a reimbursement
based on a portion of the property taxes paid
indirectly through rent payments. Trained volunteers
or staff member assist seniors in completing and
filing Homeowner/Renter Assistance claim forms. |

| Weight
Management & Diabetic Support Group |
Diabetic
Support Group – Individuals who are sugar
intolerant or who have loved ones affected with
hypoglycemia or diabetes are encouraged to participate
in this support group. A registered dietitian
will work closely with your doctor in creating
a diet that is tasty and healthy. All services
are free. Group meets the fourth Wednesday of
every month at 9:30 AM. Assistance is also available
to individually provide any participant with information
regarding special diets. This service is also
available to care management participants 60 years
of age or older. For more nutrition services,

| Blood
Pressure |
Free
blood pressure screenings are available on the
fourth Wednesday of each month from 10:00 AM to
12:00 PM. Anyone, regardless of age, is encouraged
and welcome to have his or her blood pressure
taken. Screenings are done by a trained volunteer
who maintain records, which allow a history of
each participant to be made. If blood pressure
is unusually high or low, the volunteer should
screen for “normal” blood pressure
of individual and explain. |

| Bet
Tzedek Legal Services |
Bet
Tzedek Legal Services visits the Jack Crippen
Senior Center periodically to provide free legal
advice to individuals 60 years of age or older.
Bet Tzedek’s services cover most legal areas
except divorce, criminal law, immigration or personal
injury. Those wishing legal advice must live in
Los Angeles County and preference will be given
to those with low income. |

San Gabriel Valley Independent Living Center |
Monthly
visits are made to the Jack Crippen Senior Center.
This organization provides technology, assistive
devices, housing assistance, peer counseling and
information and referral services. |

| Nutrition
Program: |
The
Senior Nutrition Program meals are designed
to give you at least one-third of the Recommended
Daily Allowance (RDA) of important vitamins
and nutrients with less sodium and less fat!
Nutrients found in the meals help maintain muscle
mass, bone strength, healthy vision, and provide
antioxidants to help protect from a multitude
of diseases. The Nutrition Program is offered
to those 60 years of age and older or their
respective spouses, regardless of age.

Individual nutritional advice and consultation
regarding special diets can be arranged with

| Integrated
Care Management Program: |
The
Integrated Care Management Program (ICM) assists
those over 18 years of age and experiencing
increasing difficulty performing the daily tasks
of everyday life, such as walking, dressing,
bathing, housecleaning, and management of medications.
The ICM Program also assists family caregivers
18+ caring for an adult 60 years or older or
a caregiver 60 years or older caring for a child
18 or under. Must be a blood relative and living
with child.
The
ICM program has as its goal the prevention of
premature or unnecessary institutionalization
and helps dependent adults (18 to 59 years of
age) and frail elders (60 years of age and older).
Licensed
professional staff is available who can assist
you in finding the help that best suits your
needs, such as in-home assistance, home-delivered
meals, assistive devices, advocacy with doctors
and public benefit programs and much more. Information
& assistance helps individuals resolve a
wide array of problems by referring them to
community resources, which can help them with
their problem or acting as an advocate to resolve
certain problems. Assistance with filling out
public benefit applications is additionally
provided.

Classes: |
8
contract classes are offered to children and adults
at various park sites throughout the community.
Prices vary according to class. Classes offered
are as follows: Aerobics, Dance (Tap & Ballet),
Gymnastics, Karate/Martial Arts, Polynesian Karate,
Tiny Tots, Gymnastics Tumbling, and Vocal.

Education Classes: |
Home
Decorative Arts (Ceramics & Oil/Water Colors)
You don't have to be "crafty" to join.
Beginning to advanced instruction is provided
using a whole array of items including clay, beads,
yarn, wood, Styrofoam, (just to name a few). Individual
and group instruction is available.
English
(Provided by a volunteer instructor)
Students will learn to speak and write English.
Class instruction is given on a weekly basis.
Exercise
Exercise to music to improve self-confidence
and health. Program begins with warm-up exercises
(to get those joints and muscles ready) and
ends with a cool-down period of stretching and
relaxation. Please check with your doctor prior
to participating in this class.
Needlecraft
Beginning and advanced students are taught techniques
in knitting and crocheting, using a variety
of tools and patterns. Blocking and basic finishing
patterns are utilized. Individual and group
instruction is available.
Spanish
Students will learn how to speak and write Spanish.
Active dialogue and student participation is
a must. If you are interested in learning Spanish,
or just brushing up on your Spanish, this is
a great class. Cost is $30.00 for an 18-week
session.
Yoga Classes
(Provided by a volunteer instructor)
Meditation and relaxation will be offered Tuesday
mornings & Thursday afternoons. Call the
office to confirm times.

| Summer
Food Program: |
The
City of El Monte, Community Services Department,
in conjunction with the California Department
of Education, provides free BREAKFAST and LUNCH
during the summer months.
The
program is designed to service children who
are 18 years of age or younger. The United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the California
Department of Education’s Nutrition Services
division (NSD) prohibit discrimination in all
their programs and activities on the basis of
race, color, national origin, gender, religion,
age, or disability.

Trips and Tours: |
The
City of El Monte, Community Services Department
sponsors day trips and overnight tours.
All trips leave from El Monte’s Jack Crippen
Senior Center located at 3120 N. Tyler Avenue.
Paid reservations are taken on a priority basis
to El Monte residents. Registration will now
be taken at the Jack Crippen Senior Center located
at 3120 N. Tyler Avenue.

Monte Senior Presidents' Council: |
The
Presidents’ Council (membership is made
up of club presidents and Seniors of the Year)
serves as the ambassadors and advocates of the
Jack Crippen Senior Center. Established in 1975
and recognized as a 503(c) tax-exempt organization
in 1993, the Presidents’ Council exists
as an unincorporated association by its members.
The
purpose of the Presidents’ Council is
to bring together a closer relationship between
clubs and organizations and their respective
members, through the use of the Jack Crippen
Multipurpose Senior Citizens Center.
The
Presidents’ Council is:
1)
sets standards for all clubs and activities
to operate under
2) promotes goodwill between the El Monte Community
and Older Adults
3) plans various activities involving all seniors
4) helps raise funds that enhance the operations
and programs of the Jack
Crippen Senior Center
5) establishes and monitors quality control
and performance of the Integrated
Care Management and the Senior Nutrition Program.
